PREMIER John Brumby is issuing an edict to all schools and kindergartens: let our children celebrate Christmas.
Speaking through the Sunday Herald Sun, Mr Brumby demanded all state schools give children the opportunity to embrace the yuletide festivities.
Carols, decorations and season's greetings have been banned from some schools in recent years for fear of offending non-Christians.
Kindergartens and childcare centres have also outlawed nativity scenes and Christmas parties.
But Mr Brumby said political correctness should not be the grinch that stole Christmas.
"It is important that schools celebrate Christmas," he said.
Mr Brumby will send a memo to schools this week encouraging them to embrace the festive season. The memo orders schools to provide "appropriate opportunities" for students and schools to celebrate Christmas and its meaning.
It recommends schools organise Christmas pageants, concerts, nativity scenes and carols by candelight.
Schools will also be asked to tell Christmas stories, explain the importance of Christmas to Australians and allow children to decorate Christmas trees.
Schools will be allowed to decide the form of their celebrations.
Christian leaders have welcomed the move, but called on Victorians to remember the true meaning of Christmas.
